In a day and age where
Microsoft is trying hard to stay up-to-date with the technological advancements
being made by their competitors, while still trying to maintain the familial
look and feel that users associate the Windows OS with, they have unveiled the
latest version of Windows – Windows 10 – that combines the best of both worlds.
Windows Business users
have forever tried to stay loyal to Windows XP and Windows 7 – the two most
appreciated versions of Microsoft’s Operating Systems.
The touch interface that Windows 8 brought to the table (quite literally)
hasn’t quite been able to whet the appetite of businesses and organizations,
who long for a more professional outlook than touch interfaces. Windows 8 was
later admonished as being too “confusing” to be accepted readily.
So, in order to address
the apparent lacunae that the previous Windows version had, Microsoft brings in
Windows 10.
The
unveiling/technical preview focuses on the OS’ core features designed to cement
the fact that Microsoft can strike a balance among touch, mouse and keyboard
without compromising on the needs of any group of users.
Some salient features
of this new version are:
1.
Return of the Start Menu:
Seeing the Start
menu as the default option will please a lot of the purists.
And to please the new-age tech savvy folk the Start menu is customizable. One
can pin Live Tiles in various resolutions on the right, while on the left the
familiar array of pinned and recently used programs and applications will give a
wholesome look and feel. The search box, and the power button that most 7 and XP
users longed for makes a return
Complete
with a “trending now” tab that incorporates Bing searches, the Start Menu is
here to restart the love that most users had for Windows Operating Systems.
2. snAPPed with the Virtual Desktop
Move over “Alt-Tab”. Say hello to the Task View button
and a new optimized “snapping” option. Snapping was first introduced in Windows
8, where two apps could be run and viewed simultaneously while being kept
beside each other.
Windows 10 takes it a notch higher. With the new Snap
feature, four apps could run side by side, simultaneously while keeping the
width of each window customizable. As a throwback to Windows 7, thumbnails of
each open app can be viewed as well.
Virtual desktops have never enjoyed the privilege of
graduating to main Window status from a utility feature, owing to a lot of
confusion regarding apps open in the main desktop or in the virtual one. That’s
where the task bar shows its efficiency. If an app is open in the virtual
desktop rather than the current one, it is viewed as an underlined feature
rather than an outlined thumbnail on the current window.
It is certainly not a ground-breaking innovation, but it subtly lets the
business users and power users know that Windows 10 is designed for their
utilities as well, while keeping the new kids on the block happy
simultaneously.
3. Command
Prompt
The old warhorse – the Command Prompt makes a grand
return with a helpful tweak that has been overdue for over a decade.
Keyboard shortcuts for copying and pasting are finally
incorporated into the command prompt, thereby becoming more harmonized and coming
as a huge relief to the purist coders who live on running script and batch
files using the command prompt. That might just comprise a tiny portion of
Windows users, but Microsoft has ensured their happiness as well, with this
modification.
Other features
in this unveiling of Windows 10 were the modification of the Charms menu into a
more robust and feature inclusive structure; the removal of the mandatory
Microsoft account to access Microsoft features and apps, and a faster and
slicker desktop version of Internet Explorer.
Targeted
mainly at the mouse and keyboard friendly demographic, this unveiling of
Windows 10 is quite likely to regain its disgruntled professional fan base.
Further unveilings are sure to focus on the applications and features that
incorporate the touch interface.
